In the wake of the catastrophic Nepal-Tibet floods, which are now believed to have claimed over 1,000 lives with hundreds still missing, one Fyshwick café owner is hoping to raise funds to assist.

Owner of The Explo café in Tennant Street, Fyshwick, Krishna Dev Maharaja, is reducing the price of a coffee to $2 from Wednesday to Friday this week. Patrons can then donate via a QR code in the café, with the money going directly to the Nepal flood relief efforts.

Mr Maharaja is originally from Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, and while he is grateful that his family do not live in the vicinity of the tragedy, feels strongly that he needs to do something to assist those affected.

“I want to give back to my home country because this is devastating,” he said.

“So many have lost their loved ones.”

Mr Maharaja has lived in Canberra for nine years, and bought what was originally Café 8T8 nearly two years ago.

He says that whilst he has already donated funds to Nepal himself, he wants to provide further opportunity for others to support those who have lost family members, friends, homes and livelihoods.

“So many have lost their houses and are living in a tent and they don’t have shelter and food,” he said.

“I see like a lot of people are helping, but still, I just want to give my support as well.”
