5 family-friendly Halloween films

Leading up to Halloween on Monday 31 October, hereโ€™s one for boos and ghouls of all ages! CW has compiled a list of films to give the whole family a (little) fright.

Please use your own judgment when showing films to your children.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (PG) 1993

The Nightmare Before Christmas sees the pumpkin king try and bring joy to Halloween Town.

This Tim Burton film quickly became a cult classic, loved by viewers of all ages, and fits for both Halloween and Christmas watching.

The pumpkin king of Halloween Town, Jack Skellington, has grown tired of all the frights that come with living in a town dedicated to scaring. He ventures into the woods where he stumbles upon the wonders of Christmas; they make children smile and laugh rather than scream and cry. Jack attempts to share the joy with the villagers in Halloween Town, with shocking results.

The claymation film captures eerily happy characters and is full of catchy tunes and slight frights.

Watch the adventures of the pumpkin king on Disney Plus and Amazon Prime.

Hotel Transylvania (PG) 2012

One of the most iconic horror monsters is back, with a goofy twist. Dracula is no longer out hunting for blood; he now runs a hotel.

Away from the human world is Hotel Transylvania, a luxury getaway for all ghouls, ghosts and frightful types. When Dracula isnโ€™t busy ensuring everything runs smoothly, he is the overprotective dad of a teenage daughter. His protection is thrown into overdrive when a human boy discovers the resort and falls for the countโ€™s daughter.

The film captures the monsters relaxing by the poolside, showing an almost human side to their holidaying in a bright, fun and easy to watch package.

Watch the chaos on Netflix, Stan, Google Play, Apple TV, Paramount + and Binge.

Hocus Pocus (PG) 1993

The Sanderson sisters bring a night of frights to Salem in ‘Hocus Pocus’.

A Halloween classic, Hocus Pocus puts a spell on its audience that keeps them coming back time and time again.

Max and his younger sister Dani prepare to spend their first Halloween in their new town, Salem. Their move coincides with the 300th anniversary of the Sanderson sisters’ execution for using dark magic. The newcomers accidentally resurrect the trio, who have until daylight to be granted immortal life. Can Max stop them before it is too late?

Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy are the perfect mix of camp and spooky in their roles as the Sanderson sisters. As an added bonus, Hocus Pocus 2 has recently been released on Disney Plus.

Witness the magic on Google Play, Apple TV and Disney Plus.

Monster House (PG) 2006

What happens when you discover a monster living in your neighbourhood – only this time, the villain is an entire house?!

DJ and his best friend Chowder are playing basketball when the ball rolls into the grouchy and spooky neighbourโ€™s yard. Nebbercracker is known for destroying the bikes of children who dare to venture on his property. The boys dare to cross; they quickly uncover the truth about the house, it is alive and it hungers for children!

The boys set out to destroy the monster, making a daring rescue, avoiding traps, and trying to convince adults who donโ€™t believe them.

See if the teens can overcome the beast on Google Play, Apple TV and Binge.

Casper (PG) 1995

Casper shows friendship knows no limits.

A house haunted by a family of ghosts receives some new guests and an unlikely friendship.

A socialite hires an afterlife therapist to rid her late fatherโ€™s house of the ghosts that inhabit it. Haunted by three ghosts who love to pull nasty tricks, unfortunately their nephew Casper also lives there and he is unusually averse to scaring. When Dr Harvey and his young daughter Kat move in, the ghosts get to scaring while Casper tries to spark a connection with Kat.

A story of friendship, devious tricks and lost love that is sure to delight viewers of all ages.
