80-year-old charged following January collision in Mawson that killed young boy

An 80-year-old woman has been charged over the death of a four-year-old boy following a collision at the Mawson shops in January this year.

On 18 January 2026, police and emergency services attended Southlands Shopping Centre in Mawson after a car driven by the elderly woman collided with the boy before continuing into a shopfront.

The boy was treated at the scene by bystanders and ACT Ambulance Service paramedics before being transported to hospital. Sadly, he was declared deceased a short time later.

Following an investigation by ACT Policing’s Major Collision Team, the woman will face the ACT Magistrates Court today, Thursday 3 June, charged with culpable driving causing death and negligent driving causing death.
