New online resources and training modules on the Safe21 online platform are designed to protect the ACT’s hospitality workers, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Safe21 online platform gives employees information on their rights and responsibilities at work, workplace health and safety, implementing COVID-19 risk mitigation strategies, communicating with their managers, and dealing with non-compliant customers. Workers can register for training modules at www.safe21.com.au.
ACT Minister for Industrial Relations and Workplace Safety, Mick Gentleman, said the online platform would help ensure the safety of hospitality workers.
“As essential workers, hospitality workers are already playing a key role in our community, and we want to make sure they can look after themselves, their workmates, and their customers,” Mr Gentleman said.
“By understanding COVID-safe practices, as well as their rights and responsibilities, these workers can be empowered to support our ongoing public health response to COVID-19.”
The United Workers Union will deliver Safe21 on behalf of the ACT Government.
“The introduction of the Safe21 platform is a step in the right direction for hospitality workers, who are some of the most exploited when it comes to wage theft and health and safety,” said Lyndal Ryan, Director, United Workers Union – ACT Region.
“United Workers Union is happy to be part of this vital project, especially during the pandemic when it’s more important than ever that workers understand their rights.
“The ACT Government should be congratulated on funding and supporting this important initiative which will help to ensure the safety of both workers and the wider community.”
The Safe21 platform also provides an advice line that workers can call to get further information and help on a range of issues.
Free accredited infection control training has been extended until 15 December, with specific Skills Sets related to food handling. Mr Gentleman encouraged employers to have their staff trained. Free infection control training can be accessed via the Skills Canberra website.
