Giants to play Friday night AFLW match at Manuka

The fixture for the 2022 NAB AFLW competition has been revealed with the Giants set to make their mark across the ACT and NSW.

Playing five home games in the expanded 10-game competition, the Giants will call home to Henson Park, Blacktown International SportsPark and Manuka Oval.

Canberra will host one Giants AFLW match in 2022, a round eight blockbuster against Carlton on Friday night, 25 February at Manuka Oval.

GWS will spend the first three rounds on the road, starting their season against the Suns on Sunday 9 January in Queensland.

They then head to Western Australia and Victoria before heading home to NSW for back-to-back home games at Henson Park in Marrickville.

Henson Park is located in Sydney’s inner west, home to the Newtown Jets and the AFL Sydney competition. It’s the first time AFLW will be played at the venue.

The Giants then return to Victoria before finishing the season with three straight home matches, including the round eight clash at Manuka.

Their round nine clash with the Tigers will be played at Blacktown International Sportspark with the date and time to be confirmed, while the round ten fixture will be announced in the coming days.

Giants Chief Executive David Matthews said the 2022 fixture has something for all footy fans.

“As the number one team for NSW and ACT, the fixture provides a mix of opportunities for footy fans to get behind the GIANTS.

“We’re thrilled to expand our home base in Sydney with two of our home games to be played at Henson Park in Marrickville. The inner-city location encourages city-based fans to come along and elite women’s footy in summer.

“Friday night footy in Canberra is a great way to showcase the game in prime time and we’re excited to continue with two games in Blacktown, which our Western Sydney fans always embrace with such heart.

“After a disrupted 2021 season for the women’s program and a delayed start to the 2022 season, I’m sure everyone is ready to get behind NSW and the ACT’s AFLW team.”

The 2022 season will consist of 14 teams, 10 rounds and one ladder, with the top six teams playing off in finals.

Round one of the competition will kick off on Thursday, 7 January, with the GIANTS set to begin their campaign on Sunday, 9 January.
