Canberra Triathletes on the podium at Stromlo

Three local Canberra triathletes have earned podium positions at the 3-day competition at Stromlo held last weekend.

The podium finishers also claimed vaulable points for the Australian Grand Prix Triathlon Series (AGPT) and NSW/ACT Billigence Pathway Championship Series (BPCS).

Athletes from across the country descended on the Stromlo Leisure Centre for the triathlon competition which featured back-to-back races, mixed formats, individual time trials, heats, and finals.

The AGPT forms part of the BPCS – eight triathlon events that are specific for Youth, Junior and U23 Pathway Athletes in the ACT and NSW.

Local Youth Athlete Bonnie Young won the Le Mans Criterium (Youth) and finished second overall in the Youth Female category. Given that Bonnie is just 12 years of age and one of the youngest in her age category, she is an athlete to watch moving forward.

Surf Life Saving talent transfer athlete from the NSW Central Coast, Zoe Clarke has continued her form throughout her first season in triathlon taking out the u23 division at Stromlo. Zoe’s first season in triathlon has proven fruitful, having had much success already including being selected on to the Palladium Property TNSW /TACT No.1 u23 Mixed Relay Team.

The Canberra weather put on a show over the three-day event with very hot and very wet conditions – including a storm that was added to the mix.

Robyn Low-Hart Coach Education and Pathway Lead – Triathlon NSW/ACT said nutrition and recovery played a key role over the weekend.

“The athletes in the Pathway have been focussing on nutrition and hydration as part of their online education. Athletes have been encouraged to put the learnings to practice in training, so that when it comes to race day, they know how to manage
themselves. There were some outstanding results over the weekend, which would not have been possible in multi day racing with poor management and recovery,” said Low-Hart.

Low-Hart also congratulated athletes on their recovery management and skills, given the nature of the event.

“Racing at this intensity, skills can mean the difference between getting a draft on the bike or missing the draft
and having a solo ride. The level of skill at this competition was very high and pleasing to see the great work that
the coaches are doing with their athletes,” Low-Hart said.
