A new leash on life as Canberra Paws Walk marks fresh start

It’s the best day on the calendar for Canberra dog lovers, and it’s back with a brand new name.

The Canberra Paws Walk will take over Patrick White Lawns on Sunday 24 May, marking the first event since the much-loved Million Paws Walk was reimagined into a fully local celebration.

Hosted by RSPCA ACT, the event keeps everything people have come to expect, from the scenic autumn walk around Lake Burley Griffin to the relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere, while placing a stronger focus on supporting pets and their owners across the region.

RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson said the heart of the event remains the same, with the aim of getting as many people along as possible.

“We’ve always had incredible community support for this event, and it’s never just been about fundraising,” she said.

“It’s about bringing people together, celebrating that bond between people and their pets, and just enjoying a really great day in Canberra.

“We’re hoping to see as many people as possible come along.

“If people get behind it, this is something we’d love to continue for many years to come.” [pull out quote maybe]

Set against the backdrop of autumn, the walk offers a classic Canberra experience, with crisp air, colourful leaves and gorgeous lake views. Even those without a dog are encouraged to attend, with plenty of opportunities to meet other people’s pets, enjoy the entertainment and take part in the day.

“It’s the best time of year in Canberra,” Ms Robertson said. “You’ve got the colours of the leaves, the blue skies, and people just out enjoying time with their dogs. You see everything from tiny little dogs to giant breeds. It’s just a really good vibe.”

Gates open from 9am, with the main walk kicking off at 11am. Visitors can expect food stalls, activities, live entertainment and a range of community and pet-focused exhibitors.

While the event is focused on a fun day out, it also plays an important role in supporting the incredible work the staff and volunteers at RSPCA ACT do to help vulnerable animals.

“Every step taken on the day helps us care for animals in need,” Ms Robertson said. “It supports everything from shelter and veterinary care to programs that help keep pets and their owners together.”

This year also introduces a new initiative, Healthy Pet Day, aimed at providing practical support for pet owners experiencing financial hardship.

Held the day before, on Saturday 23 May at the RSPCA ACT shelter in Weston, the program will offer free services including basic health checks, vaccinations, microchipping, parasite prevention, grooming and behavioural advice for eligible Canberrans.

Ms Robertson said the initiative responds to growing demand for support, particularly as the number of unwanted animals continues to rise.

“Our puppy intake has doubled in recent years, and we continue to see large numbers of cats coming through,” she said. “Healthy Pet Day is about early intervention, helping people access care and giving them the support they need to keep their pets healthy and at home.”

Bookings are required for some services and spaces are limited, with around 48 appointments available initially.

With strong early interest and a fresh new identity, organisers are hoping the Canberra Paws Walk will continue the legacy of its predecessor, with one key ingredient needed to make that happen.

“We’d love to see as many people there as possible,” Ms Robertson said. “That support is what will help ensure this event continues into the future.”
