The competition heated up amongst Australians and the Diplomatic Corps this November, with the 111th edition of the bi-annual Diplomatic-Australian Tennis Tournament in Canberra.
The Social Tennis Weekend has usually been held twice yearly since the first event in November 1965. It aims to promote interaction and friendship through tennis between the diplomatic community and local Canberrans.
People eligible to play in the Tournament include diplomatic officials and families, locally engaged staff, international representatives and invited members of the Canberra tennis community.
The Tournament is organised by a Committee of Australians and Diplomats chaired by HE Mr Ufuk Gezer, Ambassador of Turkiye. For the 111th Tournament, diplomats and Canberra residents dusted off their racquets, dug out their active-wear, and hit 18 courts over two days of friendly doubles competition.
Embassies, High Commissions and residences, as well as private citizens, opened up their tennis courts to representatives from 14 countries and Canberrans who fought fierce and friendly battles for the honour of taking out a title.
The finals took place at the Residence of the High Commissioner of New Zealand.
More than 140 players participated in the women’s and men’s beginner, intermediate and advanced competitions.
