Bridging AI skills gaps: How our tech sector is paving the way for policymakers

There’s a strange tension around AI at the moment. On one hand, businesses are launching so quickly that most people can hardly keep up. On the other hand, policymakers are scrambling to make rules for something that’s evolving by the second. It’s pretty much uncharted territory. And in the middle of that lies a huge skills gap. And not just a technical one, either.

It’s more than just a technical issue. There’s a divide between the people who really get how these systems work and the ones responsible for regulating, funding, and shaping their future. The good news is that Australia’s tech sector isn’t sitting on the sidelines. It’s already doing a fair amount of the legwork – and in some cases, providing policymakers with a model of what realistic progress looks like. Here’s how that’s playing out.

Formal education is catching up (and fast)

Until quite recently, AI knowledge lived in research labs and expert tech teams. That’s changing quickly. These days, universities and private providers are rolling out programs for regular people, not just computer nerds. You can find shorter courses, like a graduate certificate in artificial intelligence, that let you learn the basics without stepping away from your career. 

The most interesting thing about this is who’s signing up. It’s not just techies anymore. We’re talking government employees, policymakers, hospital managers, and mid-career managers who are all tuned in to the fact that AI is going to change their careers, whether they’re ready or not. When people understand what AI is and isn’t, it’s so much easier for companies and regulators to have an actual conversation.

The conversation is a lot less abstract and a lot more practical when decision-makers have greater clarity on how models are trained, where bias can seep in and what “automation” actually entails.

Industry-led standards are setting the tone

Tech companies aren’t just twiddling their thumbs waiting for the rules to drop. Many are coming up with their own mechanisms for being responsible with AI. Things like testing models, being open about how they work, and internal review teams are becoming increasingly common, especially among larger organisations.

They aren’t flawless, sure. But they’re useful. And a lot of the time, they give lawmakers something real to work with. Rather than coming up with rules out of nothing, the government can see what’s already working. What’s keeping things in check? Where are the problems? What unexpected stuff has popped up?

When a company is clear about what’s working and what isn’t, it saves everyone time. Policymakers are not left guessing and businesses aren’t blindsided. Nothing beats that kind of real-world back-and-forth.

Cross-sector collaboration is getting real

Talk about AI used to be really segmented. Tech people spoke tech, government folks spoke to government, and academics did their thing. But things are changing. We’re seeing exponentially more roundtables, advisory groups, joint studies and partnerships between the public and private sectors. It’s not just for show, either. No one group can fix the skills gap on their own.

In Australia, especially in the major hubs, the tech world is beginning to engage policymakers earlier in the process. Rather than delivering complete products and hoping for the best, some companies are seeking regulatory input even as they develop the technology.

This is a big deal. Politicians aren’t just responding after the fact. They’re learning with the industry, asking better questions, and seeing the challenges as they show up. In the end, the rules make a lot more sense — and the whole process feels less like a standoff.

Practical use cases are demystifying the technology

There’s a lot of fear around AI because most people haven’t seen how it’s used every day. When local tech companies showcase real, applied use cases – whether that’s in healthcare triage, logistics optimisation, agriculture tracking, or fraud detection – it grounds the conversation.


Policymakers don’t need every line of code. But they should be able to see what AI can do, what’s going on now, and where the real dangers are. Real examples get rid of the hype fast. They also show that AI isn’t just one thing. It’s a set of tools with different dangers depending on how it’s used. This detail is key to making good rules.

The more open the industry is about what happens, both good and bad, the easier it is to make rules that fit the situation instead of just making broad restrictions.

Upskilling isn’t just for engineers anymore

One of the most significant changes has been in who is being invited to learn about AI. It’s not just for developers anymore. Now, product managers, legal teams, HR people, and even bosses are getting training. That broader exposure also means being able to avoid scenarios where it comes down to one or two “AI experts” interpreting everything.

For policymakers, this wider skills base makes engagement easier. If tech leaders can chat plainly about what AI does, what it can’t do, and what the trade-offs are – without using complicated words – trust builds faster. 

It’s also a sign of something incredibly important: that bridging the skills gap is not just about creating more data scientists. It’s about training leaders and decision-makers to ask better questions about tech.

Final thoughts

AI isn’t slowing down. Neither is public scrutiny. AI isn’t a straightforward fix to improving productivity. However, in Australia, the tech industry is stepping up to improve public understanding by teaching, working together, being open, and setting standards that help to close the gap.

The skills gap won’t vanish overnight. But the more industry and policymakers learn from each other – rather than working against each other – the better off Australia will be in shaping AI’s role rather than scrambling to contain it.

Encouragingly, this shared learning approach is helping Australia move beyond reactionary policymaking toward informed, forward-thinking governance. When industry expertise and public leadership evolve together, AI becomes less of an unknown threat and more of a managed opportunity, supporting innovation while maintaining accountability, public trust and long-term economic resilience.
