Canberra has Great Dunny Hunt in the can

I know of the cleanest, rose-scented public toilet in Canberra but I’m not going to tell because it’s a rare commode-ity, but if any of our readers have a favourite public toilet, please submit it to The Great Dunny Hunt for the Continence Foundation of Australia.

The dunny, the john, the outhouse, throne room, whatever you want to call it, is actually a huge consideration for those living with incontinence. One in four Australians (over five million) experience incontinence, plus 38 per cent of people living with a disability who also experience incontinence.

The Great Dunny Hunt is a bit of a lavatory lark but an essential one for those who find it difficult to leave their home due to the fear of not having access to a loo, toot or WC (I have depleted my toilet vocabulary).

For those playing at home, Scullin Shops has a high-tech, automated toilet with a timed (and a tad alarming) locking system, which also plays Burt Bacharach’s What the World Needs Now.

Also worth a mention are the public toilets at the National Archives of Australia, so original they still have the 1920s original wooden seats, old school ceramic, and I’ve heard the urinals are built like bunkers. If you like a bit of art deco while doing your ablutions, consider the loos at the National Film and Sound Archives. If touchless is your thing, use the airport toilets, and if you prefer some blue, mood lighting, Wanniassa shops.

But keep it clean people, the Continence Foundation of Australia is asking for our best public toilets only. So come on “Can”-berra, take a picture of your favourite public dunny and upload it to the National Public Toilet Map (which currently has more than 21,000 public toilets listed), website or app.

Honourable mentions will also be given to the most colourful dunny and the dunny in the most unusual location. While also supporting individuals in need, Australians who enter photos go into the draw to win one of three $500 eftpos gift vouchers.

The 2023 Great Dunny Hunt finishes on Monday 19 June, the first day of World Continence Week. And, flush.
