Following the resignation of Leanne Castley from the Canberra Liberals, the opposition party has announced its new shadow cabinet.

Opposition leader Mark Parton MLA said: “These changes strengthen our shadow ministry and ensure we continue to hold this tired and out-of-touch ACT Labor Government to account across key areas of service delivery, community wellbeing and public safety.”

Deputy opposition leader Deborah Morris will take on responsibility for Women and Women’s Health.

“Women’s health is an area that deserves greater attention, stronger advocacy and better outcomes,” Mr Parton said. “Deb Morris will bring her experience, judgement and compassion to this role, ensuring the Canberra Liberals continue to listen to women across the ACT and advocate for timely, accessible and appropriate health care.”

Peter Cain MLA will take on responsibility for City Services, in addition to his existing shadow portfolio responsibilities for Government Services, Community Services and Disability, Veterans, and Seniors.

“City Services is one of the most visible areas of government,” Mr Parton said. “Canberrans see every day whether their suburbs are clean, safe and well maintained. They see whether roads, footpaths, shopping centres, playgrounds, mowing, trees, graffiti removal and basic maintenance are being properly managed. Peter Cain will bring strong scrutiny and a practical focus to this important portfolio.”

Chiaka Barry MLA will take on responsibility for the Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence.

“The Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence is one of the most serious responsibilities of government,” Mr Parton said. “Chiaka Barry, a lawyer and advocate for vulnerable Canberrans before entering the Assembly, will bring focus and determination to this portfolio, working with stakeholders and the community to push for better prevention, stronger support, and improved responses for those affected by family and domestic violence.”

Mr Parton concluded: “The Canberra Liberals will continue to apply pressure where this ACT Labor Government is failing, stand up for Canberrans who feel ignored, and present policies for a stronger, safer and more prosperous Canberra.”
