Red Rock Gorge may be one of the Canberra’s hidden gems. Located near Kambah Pool, the walk combines a peaceful track, river views and a red rock formation that feels a little out of place in the ACT.
Where is it? Red Rock Gorge is located west of Kambah with the best access along the Centenary Trail starting at the Kambah Pool carpark.
Getting there: Park at the Kambah Pool carpark and head along the Centenary Trail. Once you reach the Red Rock Gorge Lookout (which offers a nice view but it gets much better), keep going around another 1km where you will see a small unmarked trail off to the right.
The path down to the rock wall is a little steep and you may have to climb over some larger rocks, but head down and you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the red rocks. I went on a dry day which was easy to manage, but not entirely sure what it’s like when there has been rain.
Verdict: A peaceful walk through open bushland with some nice river views along the way. It’s not overly difficult, not too crowded and the dramatic red rock walls make for a satisfying finish. The only slight downside was not spotting much wildlife, aside from the sounds of birds throughout the walk. If you haven’t done this one yet, definitely add it to your list.
