Canberra’s best coffee: Inner South

Canberra’s Inner South coffee scene has some legit hipster cred.

Both new and old Kingston are an obvious choice for some jitter juice but scattered among the beautiful surrounding suburbs are quite a few winners.

Double Shot in Deakin, open 7 days 6am-2pm.

Here is CW’s list of places in the Inner South to die and go to coffee heaven:

Deakin

Double Shot in Deakin rates a little lower than expected at 4.1, but that’s from a large volume of reviews. It does get super busy and maybe suffers a little from that success at times.

That said, a big outdoor area enhanced with greenery does a good job of controlling the traffic and keeping the vibe relaxed. Also, the coffee is worth a wait.

Google reviewer Emma sums it up:

“Saturday mornings seem to be busy. There is some outdoor seating. Music is quite loud.
Coffee was pretty good and would happily go there again.”

Lava Espresso in Kingston uses Wood & Co beans from Brunswick.

Kingston

With so many quality options, Kingston could nearly have its own list, but it’s already a spotlight hog.

Nevertheless, the plentitude of coffee options need narrowing down, here’s our top choices.

Lava Espresso in Kingston (also Phillip and Weston Creek) comes highly recommended from CW staff for their toasties and speciality coffee. They use Wood & Co beans from Brunswick, Melbourne.

Local Guide Jeremy Koch rates it:

“Coffee here is amazing, and the food is good too. Definitely one of the best in town!!!
Friendly staff and great service tops off an excellent cafe experience

Penny University sources local premium produce where possible.

Penny University

Popular with tourists and locals alike. The Penny University philosophy is to source and use local premium products where possible, including Pialligo Estate bacon, award-winning bread from Three Mills Bakery, Darbalara Farm free range eggs, award-winning ham from Balzanelli Smallgoods and locally grown field mushrooms.

Local Guide M T says:

“Great coffee, great eggs and bacon, great toast. Staff were friendly, plenty of space to sit and covid safe. Did I mention how good the bacon was?”

Manuka

1or2 Café in Manuka is coming off a streak of five star reviews. Given its competition in the area, that’s pretty impressive.

Google reviewer Emily says:

“Absolutely amazing! Food and coffee was super good and just amazing service, loved my experience here!”

Next level latte art at Beess & Co Cafe, Yarralumla.

Yarralumla

Set under the trees, in the corner of the Yarralumla shops, Beess & Co Café has strong track record of excellence in customer service. They serve Cosmorex coffee, have vegetarian and gluten free options, and are dog friendly.

Local Guide Steffany Harris rates them:

“Great coffee and food. Really friendly service. Highly recommend this place if you are in the area.”
