Canberra’s biggest moments lit up social media in 2025

Canberra’s major events, wildlife, and seasonal scenery helped propel the national capital on social media this year: VisitCanberra recorded 84.6 million views across its Instragram content.

From snowfalls and dramatic weather to festivals and local favourites, the ACT’s official tourism channels showcased why Canberra is a destination worth exploring, Chief Minister Andrew Barr said.

“Millions of people have connected with content that celebrates what locals already know: Canberra is a city that surprises and delights,” Mr Barr said.

“These posts don’t just look good – they inspire people to plan a visit, explore neighbourhoods and enjoy Canberra’s year-round events.”

Major events dominated audience engagement, including FLIGHT Canberra, the Canberra Balloon Spectacular, Skyfire, and the Enlighten Festival.

Everyday moments also proved popular. Posts featuring snowfall and changing seasons sparked thousands of shares and comments, while reels highlighting new bars and dining hotspots were “saved” often — one featuring Bar Outro was shared more than 5,100 times.

Wildlife, particularly kangaroos and wombats, and wisteria blooms, autumn colours, and sunflower fields enchanted audiences.

@VisitCanberra’s top five most viewed Instagram posts for 2025 were:

  1. FLIGHT Canberra at Lake Burley Griffin reached almost half a million views.
  2. Snow covered Canberra from @air.down received just under 300,000 views and almost 6,000 shares.
  3. Canberra Balloon Spectacular views from above got 247,900 views.
  4. Canberra ranking as the best city in the world for quality of life reached over 215,000 views.
  5. Anzac Day reflections featuring the Australian War Memorial was viewed just under 200,000 times.

Mr Barr said: “Canberra’s digital presence is a powerful driver of tourism, with VisitCanberra’s social media channels inspiring people to plan their next trip to the capital.”
