The telecommunications tower, which is one of Canberra’s most iconic landmarks, is currently closed due to renovations. The Telstra website said the tower was expected to reopen in March 2026.
CD previously reported that there were plans to reopen the tower as a major tourist attraction.
The article published on 11 June 2024 stated a new deal was struck between the ACT government and Telstra to see the tower reopen as a premier tourist attraction in the region.
At the time, Chief Minister Andrew Barr said over the coming months, the government would work with Telstra on the detailed plan and partnership arrangements to restore and reopen the visitor attraction.
He said the tower was expected to have a cafรฉ, retail, and an observation deck. Local culture and stories relating to the Ngunnawal community and other families and stakeholders with an interest in the Tower will also be incorporated.
The tower was closed in July 2021 due to its rundown condition and has since been defaced by graffiti.
