Casual staff wanted for COVID call centres

To manage the demand on call centres dealing with the COVID response, the ACT Government is looking for more casual staff during the lockdown.

Customer Service Officers would call contacts of COVID-19 cases and people in quarantine to collect demographic, health, and disease exposure information, and provide information about COVID-19, quarantine requirements, and other frequently asked questions.

They would also conduct contact tracing for COVID-19 cases, monitor the welfare of people in quarantine, help to implement public health directions such as travel restrictions, and respond to phone enquiries regarding COVID-19.

The staff would work from three call centres in the ACT Health office, Bowes Street, Woden.

Applicants should have customer service experience, excellent verbal communication skills, experience with using databases, and be flexible and adaptable to a rapidly changing work environment, an ACT Government spokesperson said. Training will be provided on the IT system and soft phone.

These casual positions are initially available for up to a year, with weekend and some afterhours work. Rosters include four days on, four days off; shifts vary from eight to 12 hours; some call centres have multiple shifts per day.

Debra Beetham, general manager of the National Capital Attractions Association, the ACT’s peak industry body for tourism, said tourism and hospitality workers were interested in these temporary roles, especially those who had been displaced or stood down from their usual employment during the lockdown.

“It is a great initiative of the ACT Government to go out to the tourism, accommodation and hospitality sector to offer roles where people might otherwise be not working,” Ms Beetham said.

“We are all well aware that the tourism industry has been hit very hard by the pandemic.”
