CBR NightCrew prepare for New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve this year falls on a Sunday. St John Ambulance ACT’s CBR NightCrew volunteers normally operate from Thursday to Saturday nights, but they will extend the service by an extra night to support those affected by excessive alcohol or drug consumption, as well as other party goers requiring assistance.

Situated behind platform 5 of the Civic bus interchange, the CBR NightCrew’s tent provides a reassuring haven. The safe space is equipped with comfortable chairs, bottles of water and mobile phone charging stations.

The service will open at 9.30pm, and stay open as required.

Teams of volunteers will also roam Civic throughout the night to provide support and basic first aid.

“St John Ambulance has been supporting the nightlife of the Civic through the CBR NightCrew for seven years, and we are committed to ensuring Canberrans can have a safe night out in the city,” Adrian Watts, CEO of St John Ambulance ACT, said.

“Our passionate team is dedicated to helping partygoers have a safe experience. Whether it’s providing a bottle of water, a lollypop, or a safe place to have a rest, our team is there to look after you.”

Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury said the CBR NightCrew provides support for those on a night out when they most need it.

“The NightCrew’s dedicated team of volunteers will be ready for the fourth consecutive night this week as the city fills with Canberrans celebrating New Year’s Eve,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“This important service ensures the safety of people who are out enjoying themselves and the vibrant celebrations Canberra has to offer.”

In September, the ACT Government extended the charity’s contract until June 2026.
