Canberrans will have plenty of ways to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve at events and attractions taking place across the city.
“There is a lot happening in Canberra over the Christmas and the New Year period,” Chief Minister Andrew Barr said.
“Attending the many events is a great opportunity to show support for local businesses — while enjoying festive activities with friends and family. From Christmas Carols and New Year’s Eve fireworks, to local gifts, drinks, lunches and dinners, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”
Christmas in the city
A 16-metre-tall Christmas tree has returned to its spot next to the Civic merry-go-round, freshly decorated with ornaments and surrounded by new festive displays throughout City Walk and Petrie Plaza.
Events and activities include:
- Christmas Walk decorations
- A Christmas-themed Paws Party for pets and their owners in Haig Park on Sunday, 30 November.
- Unlimited free rides on the city merry-go-round from 1–24 December.
- Christmas carols in Garema Place on Friday evenings, 5, 12 and 19 December.
- Haig Park Village Christmas Markets on Sundays in December — stalls, Santa photos, kids’ activities, and live music.
New Year’s Eve fireworks
Canberra will welcome 2026 with two spectacular fireworks displays over Lake Burley Griffin at 9pm and midnight on Wednesday, 31 December.
The best viewing hubs around the central basin include Ferry Gate, John Dunmore Lang Place, Rond Terrace, and Wendouree Drive, each hosting food vendors and entertainment.
To make it easier for the community to decide where to shop and visit, the ACT Government has launched InTheCity.com.au, a website guide showcasing more than 150 local businesses and the best events.
