Canberra Liberals MLA Chiaka Barry has suggested that Leanne Castley MLA’s allegation of a threat of violence – a factor prompting her resignation from the opposition party yesterday – may have referred to a meeting that took place involving Opposition Leader Mark Parton, Leanne Castley, and herself in early May.
Ms Barry is Shadow Attorney-General and Shadow Minister for Social Housing and Homelessness, Multicultural Affairs.
Ms Castley resigned from the Canberra Liberals yesterday, alleging she had experienced “bullying, intimidation, lies, and even a threat of physical assault”.
Ms Barry said the meeting occurred after “what was viewed as an inappropriate exchange” between Ms Castley and her in the Legislative Assembly chamber the previous day.
“During the meeting Ms Castley apologised for that exchange, but it was still an animated discussion,” Ms Barry said.
“I understand that Ms Castley perceived momentarily that there was a threat made against her, but after Mr Parton’s intervention I very clearly clarified that this was not the case.
“I believed that the incident had been deat with at that moment.
“Given the public discussion surrounding these events, I believe it is important to clear the air and confirm that concerns raised at the time were addressed immediately.”
Ms Barry said she respected Ms Castley’s decision to move to the crossbench.
“My focus remains on serving the people of Ginninderra, the ACT, and contributing positively to the work of the Shadow Cabinet and the Legislative Assembly,” she added.
