Canberra’s iconic Civic Merry-Go-Round will be closed to the public from today (Thursday 30 October) to Tuesday 4 November (inclusive) as it undergoes maintenance and conservation works.
Mechanical, structural, heritage and electrical consultants will inspect all parts of the much-loved ride, which was built in 1914 and has entertained Canberrans since 1974.
The check-up includes an annual certification inspection, a five-year certification inspection, and a full clean and regrease of all mechanical components.
The first stage involves a comprehensive condition assessment and developing a 25-year lifecycle maintenance plan that addresses areas beyond routine maintenance to ensure compliance with heritage, safety and operational standards.
The second stage involves remedial works identified in stage one, including refurbishment, repairs, compliance upgrades, and future-proofing measures to extend the life of the Merry-Go-Round while preserving its heritage value.
Infrastructure Canberra is overseeing the continued operation and preservation of the Civic Merry-Go-Round.
