Evening for Nepal fundraiser this Sunday

Last month, flash floods and landslides struck Nepal in one of the worst disasters to hit the Himalayan region. A torrent of water, ice, mud and rock swept away villages, severing homes and burying roads. More than 84,000 people were affected, and at least 1,300 killed.

To raise money for Nepalese communities, a benefit concert will be held at the Polish White Eagle Club, Turner, on Sunday evening, from 6pm to 8pm. Tickets cost $25, and every dollar raised will go to the Emergency Action Alliance’s Nepal Flood Disaster Appeal.

The benefit concert is organised by ArtSound FM and NKSSP CBR (the Nepali Art, Culture and Literature Academy).

“We’d love to have you attend and have your support,” ArtSound FM president Steve Little said. “We’re not asking much. We’re just asking people to come out and have a cross-cultural experience, enjoy themselves, and make a contribution to those less fortunate.”

The concert will open with a prayer and songs.

The Devil and the Bunny will perform as the Australian opening act.

There will be Nepalese poems; speeches by Dr. Krishna Hamal and Dr. Durga Dutta Kandel; and a short play expressing the Canberra Nepalese community’s feelings about the disaster.

The Daisy Coolective, an indie-folk group combining Daisy Chain and the Coolabah Collective, will close the concert.

“People should attend the event out of the generosity of their heart,” Mr Little said.

“Many of us here in Canberra live a fairly comfortable lifestyle, but we also are aware as the Canberra community that we live in a very multicultural society. Even though times are tough, there’s always the opportunity to reach to your fellow man. We should use our powers to assist community where there’s a requirement to do so.

“We’ve all seen the horrible images on the news, and we sometimes feel a little bit powerless and that there’s really not much we can do apart from go: ‘Tsk tsk, gee, that’s terrible’. Well, our volunteer community at ArtSound thought we could do a bit more than that and mobilise our resources so that people in that situation might benefit.”

The benefit concert will be held at the Polish White Eagle Club, 38 David Street, Turner, from 6pm to 8pm (doors open at 5.30pm). Food and drinks, including full bar service and snacks. Tickets available from https://artsound.fm.
