Firefighting helicopters arrive for peak bushfire season

Two specialised firefighting helicopters have strengthened the ACT Rural Fire Service’s ability to respond to bushfires this summer.

From December to March 2026, the ACT will have access to a Specialist Intelligence Gathering helicopter, Firebird 100, and a medium helicopter, HT101. A second medium helicopter, HT102, is scheduled to arrive in January.

The aircraft provide rapid aerial support, including real-time intelligence, live video streaming, and strategic waterbombing.

ACTRFS Chief Officer Rohan Scott said the helicopters could be deployed within minutes of a fire being detected.

“With these helicopters on standby and ready to launch within 15 minutes, we can respond rapidly to any bushfire threat,” Mr Scott said.

“Their ability to stream live footage and collect spatial data will give our crews on the ground the critical insights they need to act quickly and make informed decisions during emergencies.”

Dr Marisa Paterson MLA, Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services, said the helicopters would play a critical role in protecting the ACT community throughout the bushfire season.

“We’re thrilled to welcome these firefighting aircraft back to the ACT to help protect our Canberra community,” Dr Paterson said.

“They will play a vital role in controlling bushfires and keeping people safe throughout the season. Alongside these helicopters, we’ll also have strong aerial support from the NSW Rural Fire Service, including large air tankers operating out of Canberra Airport.”

Dr Paterson said bushfires remained a serious risk despite relatively calm recent seasons.

“They can ignite without warning, spread rapidly, and cause devastating impacts. That’s why the ACT Government is committed to ensuring our community is emergency ready,” she said.

Mr Scott said community preparedness remained essential.

“These helicopters add valuable capability, however preparedness is a shared responsibility,” he said. “We encourage everyone to take steps now to ensure their family and home are prepared for a bushfire.”

Residents are encouraged to visit the Emergency Services Agency website for bushfire preparedness information.
