ACT Policing has charged a 37‑year‑old Greenway man following an alleged vehicle‑purchase deception and failing to stop for police.
Police will allege that in late February, the man contacted a vehicle seller through an online car‑sales platform and arranged to inspect a yellow Holden Monaro.
The man allegedly provided fraudulent documents and a fake screenshot to show payment for the vehicle.
The seller allowed the man and a woman to take possession of the vehicle trusting that the payment would be received within 24 hours. When no money was received, the matter was reported to police.
On Monday 2 March, police sighted the vehicle during routine patrols in Monash. After officers activated emergency lights and sirens directing the driver to pull over, the driver allegedly failed to stop and accelerated away.
Subsequent enquiries linked the man to hotel stays in Tuggeranong and Woden during the period of the alleged offending.
At about 11pm on Thursday 5 March, police located and arrested the man at a Tuggeranong hotel. He was transported to the ACT Regional Watch House.
The man who was subject to bail conditions will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Friday 6 March) charged with obtaining property by deception, taking motor vehicle without consent, drive vehicle without consent, failure to stop for police and dangerous driving.
