Canberrans will get a first look at the new Gungahlin Community Centre at an open day on Saturday 4 July, two days before the facility officially opens.

The Open Day, running from 10am to 1pm, will include tours, demonstrations, and activities, while the community can also meet local artists and community groups and enjoy performances.

Located on the corner of Efkarpidis Street and Gungahlin Place, the purpose-built centre includes hireable spaces, creative studios, a gallery room, dance studio, multipurpose hall, commercial kitchen, and outdoor gathering areas.

Rachel Stephen-Smith MLA, minister for the public service, said the facility would help support community connections in one of Canberra’s fastest-growing regions.

“These spaces will support a wide range of activities and services, from creative programs and cultural events to everyday community connections, providing a place for people to come together close to home,” Ms Stephen-Smith said.

A co-located youth hub will become the new home of Gunners Place, a youth and community space.

Michael Pettersson MLA, minister for children, youth and families, said the hub would help young people connect with services and opportunities close to home.

“We know that when young people have access to safe, inclusive spaces, they are better able to thrive, build relationships and engage in their community,” Mr Pettersson said.

The facility was an ACT Labor election commitment, and is intended to support Gungahlin’s growing population by providing a place for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together.

The government consulted community members and stakeholders during the planning and design process.

Suzanne Orr MLA, minister for disability, carers and community services, said the result was a facility designed to be welcoming and accessible.

“This is a space that truly belongs to the community, shaped by local input and designed to support people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds,” Ms Orr said.

The centre is accessible by light rail and bus, with nearby parking and bike facilities.
