It all starts with a cup of kindness

Cancer Council ACT was proud to host a special Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on Friday 15 May, welcoming Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia, as guest of honour. Joining her were clients of Cancer Council ACT’s ENHANCE Wellbeing Program and Wig Service – people whose lives are directly impacted by the funds this campaign raises each year.

Attendees were welcomed into the Wig Room, one of the most cherished spaces within Cancer Council ACT’s offices – a comfortable and confidential setting where trained staff help those who have experienced hair loss due to cancer treatment find headwear to suit their needs, and access cancer information and support. It is thanks to the generosity of the community that Cancer Council ACT can continue providing their vital services.

Over stories, smiles and many cups of tea, it was a morning that captured the true spirit of community.

“Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is such a powerful campaign because it’s all about connection, kindness, and supporting a cause that touches every part of our community,” said Verity Hawkins, Cancer Council ACT CEO.

“We were honoured to welcome Her Excellency and our clients to our Morning Tea and hope it inspires Canberrans to put the kettle on for their friends, families and colleagues.”

Now in its 33rd year, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea raises vital funds to help bring us closer to a cancer-free future. With almost 1 in 2 Australians diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85, every morning tea makes a difference.

Robert has been hosting his morning tea in honour of his father for 24 years, making him one of the campaign’s most dedicated supporters. Robert’s story is a powerful reminder of why hosts come back every year, because behind every cuppa is a personal story.

Nicole is hosting at her workplace, going all out with a ‘Specialty Cake Competition’, inviting and encouraging co-workers to go head-to-head in the most delicious way.

Cancer Council ACT is aiming to raise $200,000 this year, funding local prevention programs, support services and lifesaving research.
