Tomorrow, Canberra’s City Centre will come alive with the sights, sounds and flavours of Latin America when La Fiesta returns.
Now in its third year, La Fiesta has grown into a major cultural celebration, drawing thousands of locals and visitors to Latin American Plaza in City West. The free family-friendly event runs from 2–10pm.
“La Fiesta is a powerful platform for sharing Latin American culture with the Canberra community,” H.E. Dianela Pi, Ambassador of Uruguay to Australia, said. “It brings our music, dance, food and art right into the heart of the city, inviting everyone to experience the joy and diversity of our traditions.”
“We’re proud to collaborate with the ACT Government to create an event that not only celebrates Latin America but also builds connections between people and cultures.”
This year’s program includes a second stage and more performers, as well as an open-air art gallery featuring traditional and contemporary works curated in collaboration with Latin American embassies.
The entertainment lineup features a broad spectrum of Latin sounds and styles, from traditional roots to contemporary fusion — perfect for dancing, listening, and celebrating. El Gran Mono, Australia’s first Colombian picó sound system, will accompany dance performances from Melbourne’s Selva Y Tambó Columbian Dance Crew and local salsa legends Mi Tierra.
There will be a smorgasbord of mouthwatering Latin American food including tacos, tamales, and empanadas.
La Fiesta, Saturday 25 October, 2-10pm, Latin American Plaza, 38 Childers Street (between Marcus Clarke Street and the ANU) Cost: Free, with food and beverage trading. More information: InTheCity.com.au/La-Fiesta.
La Fiesta is made possible by the City Centre Marketing and Improvements Levy. Paid by commercial property owners in the City Centre and Braddon, the levy recently gave 20 businesses impacted by light rail construction grants to run their own activations. Next month, Canberra’s giant Christmas tree will return to Petrie Plaza to celebrate the festive season, and Braddon will again host the popular fringe event during Summernats, both of which are also supported by the levy.
Michael Pettersson MLA, Minister for Multicultural Affairs, said: “We’re proud to work with the Latin American community and embassies to deliver a celebration that’s welcoming, immersive and joyful. La Fiesta brings incredible energy and culture into the heart of the city. It’s about activating our public spaces, connecting people, and supporting local businesses.”
