L’affaire Davis: Independent reviewer appointed

Lynelle Briggs AO, former Australian Public Service Commissioner and Chief Executive of Medicare, has been appointed to undertake an independent review into how the ACT Greens handled allegations of sexual misconduct against former MLA Johnathan Davis.

“Ms Briggs has extensive, first-hand experience in the field of public administration with a focus on professionalism, integrity and governance, and has conducted a number of highly sensitive and complex inquiries and reviews,” Joy Burch MLA, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, said.

“I am confident Ms Briggs’s wide range of experience in roles related to integrity, administration and governance will ensure the Assembly broadly will benefit from her review findings.”

Mr Davis resigned last month after revelations that he had sexual relations with a 17-year-old – legal, consensual, but deemed inappropriate – and allegations that he slept with a 15-year-old. No information about any such minor has been found, Greens leader Shane Rattenbury said at the time, and Mr Davis had indicated to him that he did not believe he had done anything illegal.

Mr Rattenbury said the Greens welcomed the review and would fully cooperate with its proceedings.

“We will be outlining our view that the Greens took a principled approach in dealing with these allegations,” he said. “We took them seriously, dealt with them in a timely manner, sought to ensure procedural fairness, and we have been transparent about what happened and when.”
