Canberrans are urged to stay alert around the tram network as Light Rail Safety Week begins today.
Last year, a man was struck by a light rail vehicle and died, while another man was hit by a tram last week. A cyclist was seriously injured in a collision with a light rail vehicle last year.
People should:
- Always follow traffic lights, signs and road markings.
- Stop, look and listen before crossing tracks.
- Stay alert and avoid distractions, such as mobile phones and headphones, near tracks and at stop platforms.
- Never enter restricted areas or walk along the rail corridor.
- Cross tracks only at designated crossing points.
- Take extra care when cycling or riding a scooter near light rail tracks.
Transport Canberra has released a new near-miss video showing how a momentary lapse in attention by pedestrians, cyclists, motorists or passengers can lead to potentially serious incidents.
“Rail safety is everyone’s responsibility,” transport minister Tara Cheyne MLA said.
“Whether you’re walking, cycling, driving or travelling on light rail, small actions can make a big difference.”
Students from four Canberra schools are helping spread the safety message through an annual poster competition.
Designs by students from Burgmann Anglican School, Daramalan College, Dickson College and Gungahlin College will be displayed as wraps on light rail vehicles during Rail Safety Week and throughout the year.
The public can vote for its favourite of 32 student designs in the People’s Choice Award. Voting closes at 11.59pm on Monday 31 August.
Ms Cheyne thanked Canberra Metro Operations staff for operating and maintaining the network.
“The success of light rail is built on [their] dedication and professionalism,” Ms Cheyne said. “Their ongoing commitment helps ensure Canberrans can continue to rely on a safe, dependable and connected public transport system.”
