A man has been charged with animal cruelty charges for allegedly seriously injuring a kangaroo near Queanbeyan.

A statement released by the New South Wales Police Force said about 5:15pm on Sunday 13 April, a woman was walking along Millynn Road, Bywong, approximately 30 kilometres north of Queanbeyan, when she found a badly injured kangaroo down an embankment, with a rope tied around its neck.

“The woman contacted an emergency wildlife rescue line, with a local rescue organisation picking up the kangaroo and taking it to Bungendore,” the statement said.

“About 6.30pm, police were notified and responded to an animal rescue organisation on Joe Rocks Road, Bungendore.

“The kangaroo suffered severe lacerations to its rib and hip area and died shortly before police arrived.”

Following inquiries by Monaro Police District officers, about 8.30pm that same day a 60-year-old man attended Queanbeyan Police Station and was released, pending further inquiries.

“About 6.30pm yesterday, Tuesday 15 April 2025, the man attended North Sydney Police Station where he was issued with a court attendance notice for recklessly beat etc cause prolonged suffering and commit an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal,” the police statement said.

The man will appear in Queanbeyan Local Court on Monday 26 May 2025.

“Police will allege the man tied the kangaroo to the back of his car and dragged it from a property to the road, approximately 400 metres, while the animal was still alive,” the police statement said.
