A 37-year-old man who recently received bail after previously being charged with 16 offences, has been arrested overnight following him again allegedly driving a stolen vehicle.
About 7.30am yesterday, Thursday 11 August, a resident left their unsecured Hyundai iX35 SUV for a short time and when they returned outside, the vehicle had been stolen.
A review of nearby CCTV identified a white Toyota Hilux dropping off a passenger who then took the Hyundai. The Hilux was suspected of being stolen from a Watson residence earlier yesterday morning.
About 12.20am this morning, Friday 12 August, police patrolling the Woden area located the iX35 in a street in Torrens and began a search for the driver.
Soon after, a white Toyota Hilux was observed in the same area before it fled the scene at speed. Stop-sticks were successfully deployed and the 37-year-old man was located a short distance away. His possessions, including identification documents, were allegedly found near the stolen Hilux.
He was arrested and charged with ride/drive in a motor vehicle without consent, fail to stop for police, furious driving, drive unlicenced and breach of bail. He is scheduled to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today where bail will be opposed.
Anyone who has information relating to the theft of vehicles is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Information can be provided anonymously.
