Teen on intensive corrections order arrested after stealing vehicle

An 18-year-old man released on an Intensive Corrections Order (ICO) last month will face the ACT Magistrates Court today, Saturday 13 August, after he was arrested yesterday.

Police will allege that on 26 July, the man stole a gym bag containing car keys and personal identification items from a storage box at a local fitness centre. Shortly after, the keys were used to steal a VW Golf from the car park.

On 5 August, officers conducting routine patrols observed the stolen vehicle, bearing stolen number plates, on Drakeford Drive, Kambah. Police were unable to stop the vehicle at the time, but the driver was recognised as the 18-year-old.

Yesterday, Friday 12 August, NSW Police informed ACT Policing they had an approved warrant and extradition order for the man for outstanding NSW offences.

About 1.50pm, ACT Policing officers attended an address in Bonner and arrested the man. A search of the premises located the stolen VW Golf, which police then seized.

The man, who was issued an ICO in court on 14 July 2022, will face the ACT Magistrates Court today charged with driving a motor vehicle without consent, using a number plate not properly issued, and driving while disqualified.

Police will oppose bail today.

Recidivist behaviour remains a concern for ACT Policing, and the arrest of this man was coordinated by a newly established ACT Policing taskforce targeting high-risk driving behaviours and stolen vehicles which are often used by offenders to commit other crimes such as burglaries and assaults.
