Man steals taxi at knifepoint before pursuit through Belconnen

A 39-year-old man from Ngunnawal has been charged after he allegedly stole a taxi at knifepoint and led police on a chase through multiple Belconnen suburbs in the early hours of this morning, Sunday 23 February.

The man got into the taxi on Bunda Street in the city at about 2am before he allegedly threatened the driver with a knife. The driver exited his taxi on Alinga Street and called police.

The 39-year-old man allegedly drove off in the taxi and it was later located in Macquarie where police began pursuing it. It was observed exceeding the speed limit and regularly crossing onto the wrong side of the road.

The pursuit ended in Whitlam when the taxi mounted a kerb and came to a stop.

The man was arrested and later charged with take motor vehicle without consent, possess knife without reasonable excuse, unlicenced driving and reckless driving. He is expected to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday 24 February.
