Mount Stromlo High School joins ACT’s Big Battery network

Mount Stromlo High School is now home to a new 100 kW battery, installed as part of the ACT Government’s Big Canberra Battery project to support the Territory’s transition to net-zero emissions and an electrified city.

The behind-the-meter battery stores excess solar energy generated onsite and helps power the school in the evenings and overnight, cutting electricity bills and easing pressure on the grid.

“Behind-the-meter batteries are energy storage systems installed on the customer’s side of the electricity meter,” climate change minister Suzanne Orr MLA explained. “The batteries installed as part of the Big Canberra Battery project are similar to what Canberrans may have already installed at home, but on a much larger scale. The Mt Stromlo High School battery, at 100 kW, is the size of a shipping container.”

Chief Minister Andrew Barr MLA said battery storage was a key part of Canberra’s energy transition.

“As we electrify our city, we need smart, reliable infrastructure to support growing demand from increased rooftop solar, electric vehicles, all-electric homes, and emerging technologies like vehicle-to-grid energy sharing.”

Ms Orr said the new battery would help stabilise the grid, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and maintain a secure, affordable 100 per cent renewable electricity supply.

“This is about future-proofing our electricity system while delivering real benefits to the community. Through this network of batteries we’re lowering energy costs, cutting emissions, and helping to build a more sustainable and resilient city.”

Education minister Yvette Berry MLA said the school community was pleased to be part of the Big Canberra Battery project.

“Students across Canberra understand the importance of taking action on climate change… Money saved on power bills by the installation of these batteries will also be able to be reinvested back into teaching and learning here at the school.”

Mount Stromlo’s battery is one of nine installed at government sites across Canberra. AGL Energy Solutions delivered both it and two other batteries in Canberra, including a 75 kW battery at the ACT Government’s Canberra Avenue campus.

“Partnerships like this demonstrate how AGL can work with government and industry to deliver practical outcomes that advance the energy transition and create sustainable and effective outcomes for customers,” a spokesperson said.

The Big Canberra Battery project also creates jobs in the growing renewable energy sector and generates revenue for the Territory, Mr Barr said.
