There’s a new baby zebra in town: Thuli.
She was born at the National Zoo and Aquarium in June.
Thuli is mother Kiva’s third foal and second daughter.
Zookeeper Olivia Ware said Thuli was doing “really well”.
“She’s quite active. At the moment, she is sleeping, but we do see her doing zoomies around the yard,” Ms Ware said.
“She’s a little unusual in that she started eating hay quite early.
“Normally, they’ll just be drinking from mum for the first few weeks.”
She said her name, Thuli, meant peaceful in Swahili.
The National Zoo and Aquarium participates in captive breeding programs to facilitate insurance populations to support species out in the wild.
The zebra breeding program has been one of the zoo’s most successful endeavours, with 28 foals born at the Canberra tourist attraction.
It has contributed to the genetic pool of available zebras for other zoological facilities in the Australian region.
