Googong’s events season will officially kick off with a Father’s Day to remember – KiteFest.
The annual kite festival returns with a host of new flying friends, including dragons, bunny rabbits, stingrays, and a flying pig!
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own kite, buy one to fly, or simply enjoy the impressive aerial show being put on by others.
Googong Township community development manager Sam Remmers said the day was a nice opportunity to go back to those “old school values”.
Ms Remmers said running the event on Father’s Day encouraged families to get out and about during the warmer weather.
“It’s nice to have an activity to do with the family,” she told CD.
“Spend time with your family, fly a kite, have some food, then you can do something else (elsewhere on the day) if you want.
“It just gives people another option rather than just eating out.
“Especially with the weather turning and we’re getting the nicer days, it’s nice to get out”
Ms Remmers said this year the event would have an increased number of food vendors, including ice cream, cookies, cupcakes, burgers, as well as Turkish and Mexican cuisines.
She said KiteFest was important for the Googong township because it showcased the community coming together.
“That’s really important for them. That’s what they’ve invested in the community,” Ms Remmers said.
“And just seeing local families out and about again.”
KiteFest will run at Rockley Oval on Sunday 7 September from 11am-2pm.
The entertainment will include live background music from Sue Freeman of Run Around DJs, and performances by students from Empire Performing Arts Dance School.
Ms Remmers said KiteFest also marked the start of the town’s events season, which will be followed by the rural fire service open day on 18 October, a community Christmas party on 6 December in 2025, and the award-winning annual music festival, Googfest, on 14 February 2026.
