Police officers assaulted overnight in Canberra

Two police officers were allegedly assaulted and one officer suffered a broken leg during two separate incidents in Canberra last night.

About 1:50am, Saturday 1 March, police were called to a disturbance in McKellar.

Officers located a man believed to have damaged property at the residence but while they were arresting him, the man allegedly became aggressive and lashed out at police, kicking one officer and causing a hand injury to another.

He was charged with two counts of assaulting a frontline community service provider, as well as resisting a territory public official and property damage.

In a second incident, about 3am, police conducting patrols in the City observed a couple arguing outside a licenced venue.

Police separated the pair, but the man continued to yell and act aggressively before allegedly running at the woman.

Officers attempted to place the man under arrest, but both the man and woman resisted, resulting in one officer breaking his leg.

The pair were transported to the ACT Watch House and charged with resisting a territory public official. The man was also charged with breaching the peace.
