ACT police pick up drug and drink drivers over weekend

In the lead up to Christmas and the New Year, ACT Policing have been conducting additional road safety enforcement operations.

On Saturday and Sunday (17-18 December) Road Policing officers conducted operations on the Kings Highway, Kowen and Namatjira Drive, Fisher where they conducted a total of 897 random drug and alcohol tests.

Two people returned a positive result for drugs in their system and one person returned a positive alcohol result.

Additionally, one person was charged with not slowing down to 40km/h, one was cautioned for having an unregistered vehicle and one was issued an infringement for having an uninsured vehicle.

Operation Midnight also occurred in the City on Saturday night, with a further 375 random drug and alcohol tests.

These tests identified one drug driver and two positive drink driving results – one of which was an unlicenced learner driver, whose reading (0.144) was nearly three times the legal limit.

Acting Inspector Ken Williams, Officer in Charge Road Policing wants to remind the community that one person on the road impaired by alcohol or drugs, is one too many.

“We have had too many fatalities and collisions occur this year and we need to do better,” said Acting Inspector Williams.

“If you are travelling this year for the holiday season, take extra precautions when driving and ensure that if you drink or take drugs, you don’t drive.”

“Your life – and the lives of those around you – can change in a split second.”

ACT Policing will be conducting regular patrols over the Christmas and New Year period.
