Prepare to get messy! Splatter paint studio to land in Canberra

Canberrans will soon have a colourful new way to let loose, with a splatter paint experience set to open in Mitchell in late July.

Introducing Splash Lab, Canberra’s first splatter paint studio, that is designed to let people of all ages unleash their creativity in a fun, no-pressure environment.

Created by locals Chris Krajacic and Jesse Mount (the team behind fun Canberra initiative Riddle Room, Axxe and Breakr), Splash Lab is designed to bring some fun to the city.

“We wanted to create a space where people can completely let go, get messy and enjoy the process of creating something unique, regardless of artistic skill,” said Jesse.

CD was fortunate enough to try out the studio it certainly delivered on the promise of being fun and messy.

As someone who has never been great at painting and drawing, it was a liberating feeling knowing you didn’t have to take much care and could just splatter the paint loosely.

It is advised not to wear your best clothes, you’ll be provided with a smock, Crocs to protect your shoes, and a pair of safety goggles as you enter. Then, you’ll select your five paints and be handed a variety of painting tools, including brushes of different sizes, a toothbrush and a syringe.

From there, it’s up to you: make a mess or channel your inner Bob Ross. For me, getting messy was the easy choice, but if you’re more artistically inclined, you can definitely create something truly special.

One of the coolest parts of the experience was the Glow Lab, where UV blacklights bring fluorescent colours to life with an amazing glow. Just be careful if you go wild with the fluro paint, your masterpiece might look very different once the regular lights come back on. And you do get to take your artwork home, so it’s worth making it look as beautiful as you can.

They use eco-friendly, non-toxic acrylic paints that are Australian-made, vegan and cruelty-free. They’re fast-drying and water-resistant. The paint did wash off my hands quite easily, but it may leave a slight stain on clothing.

Sessions are open to all ages (recommended 3+), with capacity for up to 12 people at a time. The space is available for birthdays, private events, team building and more.

Splash Lab comes from the team at PLAYHEM, local creatives known for bringing immersive experiences to Canberra, including escape rooms, axe throwing and smash rooms.

Location: inside Riddle Room, 8/160 Lysaght Street, Mitchell.
