Queanbeyan man in court on forcible confinement charges

A 32-year-old Queanbeyan man faced the ACT Magistrates Court yesterday charged with one count of aiding and abetting the forcible confinement of a Kambah woman in 2011.

The Queanbeyan man is the third person charged by ACT Policing Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Team (SACAT) Detectives after an extensive investigation of the historic sexual assault.

In June 2021, a woman came forward to police through the Canberra Women’s Legal Centre. After lengthy engagement with the woman, SACAT Detectives arrested her former partner and two of his associates.

Police will allege that her former partner assaulted and forcibly restrained the woman at their residence in Kambah while she was holding their then six-month-old child. The victim was then forced into a vehicle where she was again assaulted and driven to another residence where she was forced to hand over the care of her child to family members.

It will be further alleged that the victim was knocked unconscious with a tyre iron and driven to two more residential addresses where she was restrained, violently assaulted and raped over the following three days.

The primary alleged offender, a 40-year-old man, remains in custody awaiting trial in the ACT Supreme Court for the offences of forcible confinement, sexual intercourse without consent (multiple counts), sexual assault in the third degree, recklessly inflicting actual bodily harm (multiple counts) and common assault.

SACAT Detectives believe there are people who have further information in relation to this matter who have so far been unwilling to speak about it.

ACT Policing encourage the community to speak up and come forward when they witness any domestic, family and sexual violence, to support those affected by it.

If you or someone you know has been affected, you can report to police by attending a police station or calling 131444. You can also submit an online report for historical sexual assault for incidents that occurred more than six months ago.

If your report relates to this matter, please quote PROMIS case number 6828851.
