Queanbeyan teen clocked at 147km/h on Majura Parkway

An 18-year-old man from Queanbeyan has had his licence suspended and been fined more than $1,800 after being caught driving at excessive speed on the Majura Parkway.

About 11.20am yesterday, Monday 13 November, police were conducting traffic targeting along the Majura Parkway when they identified a white Ford Transit van travelling southbound at 147km/h in the signposted 100km/h zone.

Police stopped the vehicle and spoke with the driver, who informed police he was working as a courier, was heading to collect an item, and had a short timeframe to collect it.

The driver produced his NSW provisional P1 licence, which restricts him to a maximum speed of 90km/h.

His right to drive in the ACT was immediately suspended for a period of 90 days. He was also issued a $1,841 infringement.

Earlier this year, the ACT Government introduced legislation giving police powers to seize vehicles for exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 45 km/h. While the vehicle was not seized on this occasion, the owner of the courier company attended the location and spoke with police, expressing their shock at the driver’s behaviour.
