The Canberra Raiders have re-signed second rower Simi Sasagi for the second time in a year.
Sasagi, 24, joined the NRL in 2021 with the Newcastle Knights, playing with the side for three seasons before joining the Raiders in 2024 on a two-year deal.
When he re-signed with the Raiders in March 2025 until the end of 2026, he had played 11 NRL matches for the Green Machine.
On 20 August, the Raiders announced the re-signing of Simi Sasagi on a new two-year extension, which will see him remain with the club until the end of the 2028 season.
The club said his form and performances this season had earnt him the further two-year contract.
CD asked Sasagi at a press conference on the same day how it felt to have the club’s confidence in re-signing him twice in the one year.
“It’s obviously a good feeling. It’s a warm feeling with the club because it gives you confidence and you feel like you want to be here,” he told CD.
“I think just the main thing is that I feel welcome at this club.
“I just want to repay them for the trust that they’ve got in me, and I just want to keep my head down and keep working.”
Sasagi told the media when the opportunity came to remain at the club, he signed straight away.
“I’m happy to be here, and I want to be here for as long as I can,” he said.
Sasagi said coach Ricky Stuart had given him a lot of confidence this year.
“Allowing me to play my kind of footy, it was a credit to all the boys around me. They’ve been playing good footy,” he told the media.
“I’ve just been trying to do my own thing off the back of that.
“So, I think that’s just a reflection of my footy, is the boys being consistent and I’m just happy to be a part of it.”
Stuart said this season Sasagi had shown what he was capable of and knew that if he continued his current trajectory, the sky was the limit for him.
“We’ve always known Simi has talent and this year we’ve seen that talent come through off the back of the hard work and commitment he’s shown right from the start of the pre-season,” he said.
“Simi’s versatility and ability to cover so many positions is valuable for our squad and the way in which he’s been able to fit in where he’s been needed this year is a credit to him and the hard work he’s done.
“We know Simi’s best football is still ahead of him and we’re very happy to have him stay with the club for another three years.”
