Severe heatwave warning for the ACT

Severe heat is expected to impact the ACT through to Friday, and the Emergency Services Agency has issued an Advice-level heatwave warning.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting maximum temperatures in the low to mid-30s, combined with warm overnight conditions that are likely to offer little relief. All areas of the ACT are expected to be affected.

To stay safe during the heatwave, you should:

  • drink plenty of water
  • stay in cool places, especially during the hottest parts of the day
  • wear light clothing, and, if outdoors, a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses
  • never leave children or pets in cars (even for a short time).

In a life-threatening emergency, call Triple Zero (000).

ACT Ambulance Service (ACTAS) Chief Officer David Dutton warned that extreme heat can pose serious health risks.

“While many of us enjoy warm weather, the harsh Australian climate can make extreme heat not just uncomfortable, but dangerous,” Mr Dutton said.

“That’s why it’s critical to act now, listen to safety advice and take steps to look after yourself and your loved ones during this heatwave.”

He said keeping cool was one of the most effective ways to reduce risk.

“Make plans today to spend time in cool places such as your home, a library, or a shopping centre,” he said. “Simple actions like closing windows and blinds can make a big difference in reducing indoor heat — don’t wait until it’s too late.”

ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Kerryn Coleman advised Canberrans to check on those most vulnerable to heat, including babies and young children; people aged over 65; pregnant or breastfeeding women; people with medical conditions or disability; and anyone working outdoors.

Early symptoms of heat-related illness can include headaches, dizziness, fainting, nausea and vomiting.

“If you or someone in your care becomes very unwell from heat-related illness, seek medical attention,” she said.
