A Tony Award-winning play will run in the region with a Canberra twist.
God of Carnage will have a very limited return season at The Q (Queanbeyan Performing Arts Centre) from 29-31 August.
Originally written by French playwright, actress, novelist and screenwriter Yasmina Reza, and translated into English, the play is dubbed “a comedy of manners, without the manners!”
When two couples meet to discuss the playground incident between their sons, the evening begins quite amicably.
Soon, however, the afternoon deteriorates from one of mild unease and discomfort into a deluge of accusations, recriminations, jealousy and rage.
Echo Theatre has re-imagined the play, setting it in Canberra in a vibrant new production.
Cast member Jenna Roberts said the show was such a relatable premise.
“It’s this snappy, relevant modern play,” she told CD.
“Grounding it in Canberra just made sense and makes it even more juicy and relatable if we can imagine these things happening in our own backyard.”
Ms Roberts said families, parenting and marriage were universal things we could all relate to.
“I think this is a play peeling back that thin layer of civility and getting into the juicy things in our life,” she said.
“…When the mask comes off, that thin layer of civility is peeled back and we reveal what’s really underneath.”
Ms Roberts said the show starts out simply nice but as the conversation flows a few nerves are touched.
“Whether you’re a good parent and whether you’re a decent citizen, should have more children, are the marriages working, if you like your spouse,” she said.
“The tension escalates, quite chaotic as they start drinking.”
Ms Roberts said people should come to the show because it was a short one act play with no interval and a nice out at the theatre – and, she added, they’ll be home by 9pm.
God of Carnage will embark on two-and-a-half-week tour across New South Wales in partnership with Arts on Tour.
