Special events to boost Canberra’s nightlife

Canberra’s nightlife will benefit from more than 40 special events over the next year, with extended trading hours automatically applying to eligible licenced venues, the ACT Government announced.

“Canberra’s night-time economy is a vital part of our city’s identity and growth,” Chief Minister Andrew Barr MLA said. “By declaring over 40 special events in advance, we are giving businesses the certainty and flexibility they need to plan, celebrate, and thrive. Events like these bring the community together, encourage tourism and support local businesses, and we’re proud to support that.”

The first special event is the Socceroos’ game against New Zealand at GIO Stadium on 5 September.

Other declared events include the AFL and NRL Grand Finals, Floriade NightFest, SpringOUT Pride Festival, the Australian Tennis Open Finals, and the Enlighten Festival. Raiders home festivals are also expected to be added once confirmed.

General, on, club, and special licence holders not already licensed until 2am will be able to trade until that time during special events. Venues must still meet licence conditions, but will benefit from free extended floor plans and reduced annual fees for supporting live music and the arts.

Acting Night-time Economy Minister Chris Steel MLA reminded businesses of their responsibility to minimise alcohol-related harm.

A full list of events can be found on the ACT Legislation Register.

Businesses can access free, tailored support through Access Canberra to make the most of these opportunities.
