Storm season officially starts today, as warmer months increase the risk of severe weather.

Storms can strike with little warning. Torrential rain, damaging winds, large hailstones, and lightning can lead to flash flooding, damage buildings, and bring down trees and powerlines.

The ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) urges the community to prepare now.

Chief Officer Steve Forbes advises: Clear your gutters; trim trees; remove and secure loose items; and check you have home and contents insurance. Check the weather before heading out, and reconsider your plans if severe weather is forecast. Create a survival plan so you and your family know what to do if a storm hits.

“It’s essential for everyone in the community to take steps now to prepare. Storms can happen anywhere, at any time, being emergency ready can make all the difference.”

“Canberra, now is the time to get ready,” Dr Marisa Paterson MLA, Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services, said. “Even if your home isn’t directly impacted, storms can still disrupt your daily life. Power outages, blocked roads, and loss of phone or internet services can leave you isolated or without access to help.

“Knowing what to do before during and after a storm can really make the difference in how impacted you are by a storm.”
