Take 6 with Lawrence Mooney

Comedian, broadcaster and TV host, Lawrence Mooney has been keeping audiences entertained for decades and intends to keep it that way when he comes to The Basement Canberra – encouraging us to ditch the self-help and approach life by Embracing Your Limitations on Thursday 23 November. Canberra Daily caught up with the funny man ahead of the show to discuss laughter, dreams and changing times.

1. Tell us about the show.

This show is the anti-self-help show. It’s a wellness workshop that will save your life and have you laughing at your dreams for the future. I’m a recovering self-help addict and I’m going to set you free. And this seriously is the funniest show I’ve ever done.

2. Why do you think people are so drawn to self-help books?

People want quick-fix, simple solutions to difficult situations – that’s why the Liberal Party exists. The problem with self-help is the first word. Self. You cannot trust that person, they are no good. Ask somebody else for help, not self.

3. When did you know you wanted to do comedy?

When I heard the laughter in secondary school. I could take a classroom from zero to 100 with a stupid answer. It felt so good. I’d even have the teacher laughing – except Father Barry. He didn’t laugh, ever. He would look at me and ask in a thick Northern Irish brogue, “Do you think you’re a clown in a circus?”

4. Any career highlights?

Yes, performing as Malcolm Turnbull to the full Labor Caucus in the National Press Club on budget eve 2017. For a political junkie comedian that was mainlining pure joy. I made Penny Wong laugh.

5. How has comedy changed over the years?

The scene’s become more diverse, which is a great thing. But comedy essentially is the same – make the audience laugh. The audience is always different, so you adapt. The idea that comedy is being run out of town is bullsh*t.

6. What’s next for you?

I’m writing a new show for 2024 called Pigeonhole premiering at Adelaide Fringe, Brisbane Comedy Festival and Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and I’m going to work in the UK.
