Teen boy charged after two aggravated robberies in Canberra inner city

A 16-year-old boy will face the ACT Childrenโ€™s Court this morning after allegedly committing two aggravated robberies last night.

At about 9:20pm on Monday 3 March, the 16-year-old and another male entered a convenience store on London Circuit, City wearing black hooded jumpers and face masks.

At this time, they allegedly began to make demands of the shop assistant, before stealing his mobile phone from him.

When the shop assistant attempted to retrieve his phone from the males, they allegedly punched him repeatedly in the face.

Subsequently, the pair allegedly stole items from within the store, and behind the counter, before leaving. The store was left a mess after one of the males knocked items off the counter.

At about 9:55pm, a man was walking through the Australian National University (ANU) campus, when it is alleged that the same two males approached him and demanded that he give them money.

The pair then allegedly pinned the man to the ground, stomped on his head and stole his mobile phone.

The man attempted to retrieve his mobile phone from the two males, however they allegedly continued to assault him before they ran from the scene.

Bystanders reported the incident to police. Police arrived at the incident location shortly after and observed the two males. Upon seeing police, the pair ran from the area.

Police searched the area and officers located one of the males โ€“ the 16-year-old boy โ€“ who was subsequently arrested.

He has been charged with two counts of aggravated robbery in company.

Enquiries are ongoing to identify the second male allegedly involved in the robberies. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via theย Crime Stoppers ACT website. Please quote reference number 7987530. Information can be provided anonymously.
