Just a short drive from Canberra, the regional NSW town of Bungendore took out gold at a top tourism award ceremony at Parliament House this morning.
Presented by the Australian Tourism Industry Council, Australia’s Top Tourism Town Awards celebrates the regional towns and tour guides that help to shape the landscape of Australian tourism through offering intimate and authentic experiences for visitors.
Bungendore, from the Canberra region, took out the Gold in the Small Tourism Town category.
The national finalists are determined from the Gold winners at the state and territory level of the awards. With an estimated 5,000 residents living in Bungendore, the regional town was in the Small Tourism Town (population under 5,000 but over 1,500) category.
Canberra Region Tourism Industry Council chief executive officer Dr Naomi Dale said with so many extraordinary destinations across Australia, it was a huge achievement for the Canberra region to be recognised on the national stage.
“This win follows Bungendore’s local success earlier this year and the launch of an exciting new marketing campaign by the Queanbeyan-Palerang team, who have done an outstanding job showcasing the very best of the region,” Dr Dale said.
“Bungendore is truly a shining gem within the Canberra region, steeped in history, alive with vibrant food and wine experiences, and surrounded by our world-class cool climate vineyards.
“To see this historic town recognised nationally is a proud moment, and a reflection of the passion and dedication that continues to drive unforgettable visitor experiences in our region.”
Located just a 40-minute drive from Canberra, Bungendore has become a beloved destination for those seeking a genuine country escape.
The town offers a diverse array of attractions, from cool-climate wineries and paddock-to-plate dining experiences to boutique shopping and charming galleries.
It’s a place where visitors can connect with local makers, savour regional flavours, and immerse themselves in the authentic country charm that defines the village.
Queanbeyan-Palerang deputy mayor councillor Esma Livermore saw the win was a remarkable achievement for Bungendore and the region.
“The heart and soul of Bungendore are its people, and this national award is a well-deserved recognition of their dedication to creating memorable experiences for every visitor,” Cr Livermore said.
“We are incredibly proud to showcase the rich stories, artistry, and incredible hospitality that Bungendore is famous for on a national stage.”
QPRC’s marketing team leader Emmeline Chidley said the award will provide an incredible platform to amplify the council’s Meet You in Bungendore marketing campaign, which is currently in-market and achieving outstanding engagement with potential visitors.
“We’re extending a warm invitation to travellers to come and discover what makes this town so special,” she said.
“Our curated itineraries are designed to help visitors slow down, stay a little longer, and forge a deeper connection with the people and places that make this region so unique.”
The Top Tourism Town Awards are a celebration of the heart and soul of Australia; smaller regional areas.
The towns are judged within categories based on population, alongside their attractions, amenities, accommodation and the ability to welcome and host visitors with ease and heart.
