When is it time to consider varicose vein treatment?

Varicose veins are twisted, bulging veins that are generally harmless and sometimes don’t cause any discomfort. So, for some sufferers of the condition, treatment isn’t a priority. But some signs will tell you it’s time to reassess, says Dr Zil Yassine, director of The Vein Institute.

The symptoms worsen

According to Dr Yassine, “varicose veins come with a host of unpleasant symptoms, like itchiness, aches, fatigue, and even outright pain.”

If you find that the symptoms are getting worse, it’s likely a sign that your varicose veins are worsening.

As with any medical procedure, you should seek treatment soon to avoid the condition progressing and leading to more issues.

“If you leave varicose veins untreated for too long,” says Dr Yassine, “they can lead to swelling and skin discolouration around the affected area. In some cases, they can even cause ulcers or blood clots.”

Because varicose veins often get worse over time, it is best to treat them sooner rather than later.

There are other health issues at play

Varicose veins don’t exist in a vacuum.

They affect and are affected by your overall health. And unfortunately, they present a serious risk for some patients.

If you smoke, have diabetes, or have a blood disorder like haemophilia or low blood pressure, seek treatment.

Addressing the condition early on gives you the best chance to avoid dangerous symptoms.

They’re affecting your self-esteem

According to Dr Zil, “Varicose veins are more than a cosmetic issue. But that doesn’t mean the effects of how they look should be dismissed.”

If you find yourself covering up, not liking how your legs look or starting to lose confidence, you’re not alone. Varicose veins are never pretty. So, even if you want them gone for purely aesthetic reasons, you should seek treatment.

Not to mention, treating the condition sooner can save you a lot of trouble down the line.

For many people, varicose veins not only affect their overall health but also their self-esteem.
