Where’s The G Spot?

An unlikely Canberra institution, a late-night snack van cheekily called The G-Spot (est. 2001) has quietly closed its doors.

Its famed deep-fried Tim Tams (even deep-fried Wagon Wheels, Oreos and Turkish Delights) will be sorely missed by the ravenous night owls who visited the van, which is parked at the Gungahlin Lakes Golf Club car park.

In a post on Facebook on 26 June, the owners stated: “It’s taken me a few days to process and figure out how to tell you all and it’s with a heavy heart that I have to announce the closure of The G Spot, for now. We’re not sure what the future holds for us just yet but for now we need to step back, take a break and look after ourselves. I can’t thank the staff, community, regulars, friendships made, families, everyone enough for all of the support.”

The outpouring of gratitude has come as thick as The G Spot’s famous gravy, with many loyal customers requesting one last deep-fried Mars Bar for the road, or a recipe for their legendary gravy.

The food truck was much loved for its cheeky sense of humour (sassy name and clever marketing) and it even came with its own merchandise such as bumper stickers (“Find the Sweet Spot”) and coffee cups.

Its adoring fans are known as “G-spotters” and on Facebook it has 18,000 loyal followers.

Their commitment to local community was strong and during the 2020 bushfires The G Spot helped to support affected communities and wildlife rehabilitators, for which they received a community award.

More than 200 comments on Facebook mourned its closure, including the Gungahlin Branch of the CWA, which stated it: “certainly has appreciated the support you have given our Branch with the dedicated collection bin for the Container Deposit Scheme .10cers. Your assistance has enabled us to continue support local charities, especially ROUNDABOUT.”

The G Spot will no doubt enter into Canberra folklore along with other icons like the Private Bin – a right-of-passage for many a Canberran. It will be remembered for its bold branding, deep-fried comfort food and community spirit.
